2022 Spencer T. Olin Tournament Highlights
Champ Flight
winner – Chris Pestka
What a showdown
in the champ flight. Second year member Chris
Pestka battled it out with new player Geoffery Hodgkins. Starting off the front, Chris played the
first 7 holes at -1, he then added another birdie on 9 to make the turn with a 37
and a 3-stroke lead over Geoffery Hodgkins. Chris started off the back with a double on
ten and then added a rare for him, triple bogey on 13. That’s where Chris got back on track, Slamming
home a birdie on the next hole. Chris parred the final four holes and added a saucey
20 yard sand shot to a downhill pin that he stuck to a foot to get up and down
for par on 18. Pestka finished up with a 40 on the back for a total of 77. That was Chris’s second win this season and
brought home a W for his lady on her birthday. Great win, Chris.
A Flight Winner
– Jason Carpenter
First year member,
Jason Carpenter came out for his second tournament of the year on the AGT. Finishing second in his first event, Carpenter
was ready to get after it today. Jason
started out by paring 7 of the first 9 holes on the front to shoot a 38 and was
tied for the lead going to the back side.
After a couple of hiccup holes to start the back, he carded two very impressive
birdies on the par 3 12th, and the Par 4 14th. After the birdies he rode the par train all the
way in and captured his first Victory on The Golfweek Amateur Tour. Congratulations, Jason. Also, with the score you shot I want to congratulate
you on being promoted to the Champ Flight. Way to go, Jason.
B Flight
Winner – Phil Sherer
C Flight
Winner – Dennis Sherer
We had us a
good one today in the B flight on the AGT.
Albert and Phil have been going back and forth all year, today was no different. Albert came out and started with a couple of bogeys
but snapped out of it and parred five straight holes to right the ship and put
him in position to go for the win.
Albert shot 41 on the front and was down by 2 going to the back. Phil played well on the front, just couldn’t
get any putts to fall. Phil carded 4
pars and 5 bogeys but came in at the turn with a 42 and was still in striking
distance. New tour member Scott Harper
held the two-stroke lead at the turn with a 39.
Onto the back, Albert started off with a birdie on ten to put the
pressure on. He added four more pars, but
it was the double on 15 that hurt him down the stretch. Albert finished with a 41 on the back to
shoot a total of 82. On the back, Phil was
just solid as can be, those par putts started to drop for him and his final score
with the 39 he shot on the back made for a total of 81 to beat his buddy Albert
Delamarter by a stroke. That makes it 6
wins in his last 12 Golfweek Events and 3 wins out of the 5 tournaments we have
had this year. This man is on fire. Way
to go Phil. On top of all of that, Phil’s Dad, Dennis Sherer,
was making his first start with AGT in the C flight. Dennis came out and showed us where Phil gets
it from. On the front, Dennis made 5
pars and nothing worse than bogey to shoot an even 40 and take a two-stroke
lead to the back. Dennis got it going on
the backside with back-to-back pars on 10 and 11, then poured in a birdie on 13. At that point, he had moved out in front of
the pack and put himself in position to win his first ever tournament he has played
on the tour, and that’s exactly what he did. He finished the back with a 42 and
total score of 82 to smash the competition by 7 strokes. The best part about all of this is that they
both won at the same tournament on Father’s Day. Does it really get any better than that!? Super happy for the both of you guys. What a great memory to always cherish. Congratulations
you two.
D Flight
Winner – Les Mays
Les Mays coming
off his victory at the last tournament, he was trying to go back to back. After
starting off a little rocky, he put his game on kill and played the last four
holes on the front at -2 making some great birdies on 7 and 9 to shoot a solid
41 on the front an take a huge 4 shot lead to the back. Although the D flight
golfers were chasing Les down on the back side he managed to do just enough to
get the job done to hold up his second trophy in as many tournaments. Coming
home he carded a 49 on the back for a total of 90 to hold of Justin Finley by
two strokes. That makes it number 2 for Les on the AGT. Congratulations, Les. Let’s see if you can
three peat at Aberdeen.
