Grand Cypress Big Hit With Tour Members
Grand Cypress proved to be everything we expected and more! The course was in superb condition and the service was first class in every way. If you missed it, you missed a great day.
Dennis Cargo, Brian Mack and Dennis Brady became the first two time winners in 2010. Cargo led the way in the A flight with a solid 77. He was two better than Steve Johnson and Stacy Banach. They were the only ones under 80 in A flight as the course was long and challenging.
Mack found the course to his liking as he blistered the Nicklaus tribute to the Old Course at St. Andrews with a round of 80. He topped Mike Salik and Wayne Weaver by four strokes. On any other day, 84 would win the C flight, but not this week.
Brady's victory came in the senior Championship flight. He recorded a fine 73 that included a 1-under 35 on the front nine. It was good for a one stroke victory over Bill Foster's 74. Foster (pictured above) 74 was good enough to tie for first place in the regular Championship flight with BJ Johnson. They headed out for a playoff and Bill prevailed quickly on the first hole as BJ's approach shot hit the green but backed up into the water. Both are first players on tour and making their mark early. Black Bear winner John Ward (and current points leader) missed the playoff by one. The Championship flight is the largest flight on tour and the competition is outstanding each week.
The B flight was loaded with good scores. Arnie Guerra was the best of them all as he posted a terrific 77. But he needed every putt as he edged past Steve Cleary and Bill Robertson who each shot 78. Geoffrey Bride and Tim Sobitz also broke 80 as they came in with 79's.
Newcomer bob Miller shot lights out in the D flight as he shot an 84. He coasted to a six shot win over James Rearden (90). Alberto Esperon was two strokes further back with 92.
Steve Johnson's 79 held up for first place in the senior A flight. He edged past Ed Paterniti (80). David Parker and Gary Allen were one more back on 81. Guerra doubled up as the senior B winner with his 77. Bill Robertson and Tim Sobitz were second and third with 78 and 79, respectively
NEXT EVENT is May 1 at Southern Dunes.
