LAKE
BUENA VISTA, FL. – They call it “the Happiest Place on Earth”. It was true for Garrett Morrison, Tom Dillon,
Ray Rodriguez, Chuck Jaqueth and Braodon Prokop as they each won their flight in
the Orlando Golfweek Amateur Tour event played at Walt Disney World’s Palm
course. Morrison needed a one-hole
playoff with Dalton Farrar of the Nashville tour to claim his victory. They each shot 73’s. The victory pushed Morrison back into first
place in the Player of the Year race in Championship Flight, ahead of John
Bessette. It was Morrison’s sixth win of
the season. Doug Powell (Champ flight)
provided the highlight of the day by holing a 160 yard 8-iron shot from the
rough for an eagle 2 on the 410 yard par-4 fifth hole.
A-Flight
points leader Tom Dillon captured his flight with a solid round of 77, which
included an even par 36 on his second nine after going out in 41. Al Brosman couldn’t hold Dillon off as he
finished two strokes back with 79.
Dillon has already clinched the Player of the Year for A-Flight with his
imprerssive play all year—11 top five finishes including 5
victories.
Rodriguez fired an 82 to take the top spot in
B-Flight. He won by three over Dan
Seidenfaden and climbed back over Jim Kenney into first place in the B-Flight
Player of the Year race. They too will
settle the race in the season finale September 15 at
ChampionsGate.
C
flight went to Chuck Jaqueth. It was his
first victory of the season. He shot 90
to take a 2-shot win over Jay Freeman.
Two more players, Brian Mack and Chase Forsyth were another stroke back
on 93. Freeman’s second place finish
will tighten the race for the C-Flight Player of the Year. Dennis Frantz still
leads.
Brandon Prokop scored a victory in D flight after a
two-hole playoff with Dan Salik. Salik
seems to be snake-bitten this year as he finished second for the fourth
time. This time was more painful as he
suffered a two-stroke penalty for being late for his starting time. His brother Mike, who plays in B-Flight
kidded him afterwards, saying “well, we have one more event left, so I guess you
have time to find another way to finish second”. Only a brother could get away with
that!
In
senior play, Rob Kempinski continued his outstanding play by posting a 1-under
71 to top Senior Championship flight.
Bill Foster was second with 76.
Senior A required yet another playoff as Gene Johnson of the West Palm
Beach senior tour and Ed Paterniti tied with rounds of 80. Paterniti won on the second extra hole. Ray Rodriguez was tops in senior B with his
82. Chet Parker was second with 86
followed by first time player Jim Kass.
Disney’s
Palm course is used during the PGA Tour’s Children’s Miracle Network Classic in
November.
