Maybe it was the long winter layoff. Maybe it was first tournament nerves. Maybe it was the challenging Walkabout Golf Club. Whatever it was, a sellout field at the opening day of the 2008 Edwin Watts Amateur Tour struggled despite calm, near perfect playing conditions. That doesn't mean that there weren't some good performances. In the Championship flight Mark Kinder, perhaps taking advantage of the absence of defending national champion Chad Frank, carded a fine 75 which included a nifty 1-under 35 on the tough front nine. It was most impressive since he played the back nine first and came back from a 4-over 40 on his first nine. James Dunlop, a first year player on tour, was a distant second on 78. Two others followed with 79's. The A flight was more closely contested. David Parker fired a 79 to edge past Tim Sobitz by a stroke. Scott Sharp, Ed Paterniti and Craig Stone all came in with 81's. Tim's 80 was good enough to take the Senior A title, again over Ed and Craig. The B flight was also tightly bunched at the top with Dave DiMauro's 81 edging past Eric Mead and Anthony Gutierrez by a single stroke. Rick Broennle was next at 83. Two players pulled away from the pack in C flight. Jeremy Langeneck had probably the hottest round of the day with an 83. Still, Len Benedetti was close by, finishing with 85 to take second. Brian Mack, moving up a flight this year, got off to a good start by tieing for 3rd with first time member Clay Galloway. In the D flight, another first year player took top honors as Chris Stahl shot 88 which was good for a six stroke win over Ruth Traver. Chris Benedetti finished third. In the senior flights we are glad to have more players in the Senior Championship flight than ever. Newcomer Ray Darmstadt, Jr wasted little time in making his mark. He tied with Jeff Kronauge for top honors. Both shot 78. Ray took the top prize (and points) with a victory on the first playoff hole. Tim Sobitz, as mentioned earlier, took the Senior A flight. Senior B flight went to Greg Takacs. His 85 edged Chet Parker by one. Next up is another visit to Brevard County as we take on Duran on April 5.
