Golfweek Announces Sponsorship of the Amateur Golf Tour
ORLANDO, Fla. (Nov. 15, 2010) - Golfweek magazine - the most authentic, authoritative and independent voice in golf - today announced the newest addition to its extensive events portfolio, the Golfweek Amateur Tour. Formerly known as the Amateur Golf Tour, this unique event series offers non-professional golfers of all ages and abilities the opportunity to play against their peers in hundreds of competitive tournaments while also garnering national exposure.
"Amateur golf has been a driving force at Golfweek for more than 30 years, which is why this tour is such a good fit for us," said Jason Redditt, publisher of Golfweek. "The Golfweek Amateur Tour will allow us to go beyond the pages of the magazine to not only engage serious golfers on a more personal level, but also support and grow this segment of the competitive game."
With its newly minted name, this exciting amateur series begins its 17th season in 2011 with tournaments in 36 different cities across the United States. At each event, participants are divided into flights based on handicaps - ensuring competitive play at every level - and earn points toward a season-long points championship. Tournament format for all Golfweek Amateur Tour events is gross stroke play with USGA rules in effect.
"This exceptional tour has been a huge part of the amateur game for nearly two decades, thanks to both the quality and quantity of its events," said Armand Cimaroli, Golfweek's director of events. "In 2010 alone, the tour hosted more than 22,000 tournament rounds across 600 events, and we plan to expand the series even further in the coming years."
